How to become a Certified Medical Interpreter in Washington State

These instructions are for interpreters seeking a certification in Spanish but the process is similar for other languages.
Step 1: Understand Certification Requirements
To obtain a DSHS (Department of Social and Health Services) certificate in Washington State, you’ll need to complete a Medical Certification written test through either NBCMI (National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters) or CCHI (Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters). Both organizations require you to complete a 40-hour Medical Interpreter course as a prerequisite.

Step 2: Choose Your 40-Hour Medical Interpreter Course

Step 3: Complete a Spanish Language Proficiency Test
If you graduated from a high school in the United States, you’ll need to pass a Spanish proficiency test before registering for certification. You can choose from:

Step 4: Register for the Certification Test
Once you’ve completed the course and passed your Spanish test, you’re ready to register for the certification test with either NBCMI or CCHI. The combined cost for testing and registration is approximately $200.
